Idylle
I have just finished a new series - "Idylle", for a show at Museum Jan Boon in the Netherlands in May 2023.
An idyll is a kind of Utopia, not really existing in the here and now, but only briefly passing, or perhaps only there in memories and romantic wish-thinking.
We are living in turbulent times, going from the pandemic to a war in Europe and increasing climate problems. Sometimes it feels like the whole world is crashing to an end.
To cheer myself up, I try to hang on to the beautiful and positive elements in my surroundings and I find myself returning to images of harmony and simple living. I use pictures of the children when they were little and we were smallholding more than we do now, growing vegetables and livestock, an abundance of young animals and homegrown food. One tends to forget all the hard work, the tiredness, the deaths of animals, the moment of slaughter. Only the frolicking lambs remain. Of course, it is escapism. But don’t we all wish to escape reality every now and then?
The role of the painter is to convey emotions, perhaps. In previous paintings, such as the MILK project, I concentrated mainly on the animals and their welfare, and these works were sometimes quite sad. Now, the time has come for me to offer a small moment of happiness and joy to the viewer.
Idylle in landelijk De Rijp

In Museum Jan Boon is de hele maand mei de expositie “Idylle, een pastorale in verf” van Philine van der Vegte te zien.
Wie het werk van Van der Vegte kent, weet dat haar dierschilderijen vaak een duister randje hebben. Voor deze expositie heeft ze die sombere kant losgelaten, en ook haar palet opgevrolijkt.
Een idylle is een soort utopie, niet zozeer bestaand in het hier en nu, maar een vluchtige herinnering aan een zorgeloze tijd, of een wensdroom. Van der Vegte wroette in haar geheugen naar dit
soort herinneringen, echt of ingebeeld. Ze gebruikte foto's van haar kinderen toen ze klein waren en ze meer bezig was met zelfvoorzienend leven dan nu. Ze verbouwde groenten en hield
kleinschalig vee. Op de boerderij dartelde een overvloed aan jonge dieren en groeide voedsel in de moestuin. Je hebt de neiging om al het harde werken, de vermoeidheid en het moment van slachten
achteraf te vergeten. Alleen de huppelende lammetjes blijven over. En die heeft ze dan ook geschilderd.
Natuurlijk is het escapisme. Maar willen we niet allemaal zo nu en dan even ontsnappen aan de werkelijkheid?
